I’m going to work at Twitter!
It’s been a year or so since the « Twitoaster project » has started. Thanks to your suggestions and your support, the « little threading tool » has turned into a much richer experience.
Analytics charts, statistics and rankings, Embeddable Widgets, a Conversational search engine… But also an Open API, which gave birth to a couple of nice plugins (WordPress, Blogger / iGoogle…)
I really had fun developing all of this and talking with you guys to improve Twitoaster in new and innovative ways. You’ve been more and more to use the service, it has received a very nice Press coverage, and it gave me the chance to meet and talk with so many interesting people!
The thing is I’ve also been talking with Twitter since mid-April (just after the Chirp conference, actually). Great discussions, Awesome team, and… So exciting projects! I can’t tell you more about that, but I guess you get the point: I’m now going to work at Twitter.
So what does that mean for Twitoaster? The service will keep running: the website, the API, the widgets, the plugins… Everything. But it shouldn’t evolve that much starting from now. I’m really sorry for those of you waiting for features we had planned to add, but I hope you’ll understand I’ll have to focus 100% on my new job.
I hope you enjoyed – and you’ll continue to enjoy – Twitoaster as much as I did. Thanks again to all of you! That was really fun, and it’s going to be awesome at Twitter :)

Have you considered finding someone to take up this project? I’m sure that twitter plans on incorporating much of the functionality… But, is often the case with every great idea Twitter acquires… they break it, or loose track of the original concept and turn into something not nearly as good as the original, or they just shelf it all together. I mean they can’t even keep their own site running for more than 6 hours at a time with out everyone seeing the whale. Which is ridiculous considering they aren’t even one of the worlds 10 busiest sites. We need fewer developers taking residence with the big social media companies and more developers working outside of them creating not only supporting products and services but working on alternatives all together. Shame really, Twitoaster could have been great.
20 June 2010 at 1:45 am #
Twitoaster will continue to live (and hopefully evolve if I find time for it) so you’ll still be able to use it :)
Concerning Twitter, they didn’t make that much acquisitions: I can remember Summize, Cloudhopper, Atebits, and Dabble DB… They don’t look like “serial-acquisitors” to me! Anyway, I never had that feeling they “broke” something or “lost track of the original concept”.
What do you mean by these “alternatives” developers should work together on? Stop filling holes? Building something completely new in top of the platform?
21 June 2010 at 2:24 pm #
They aren’t know serial acquisitions? You just named 4 major acquisitions they made in just the 4 years they’ve existed, and to be clear you should do some homework on companies like Tweetie or the other 3 dozen smaller acquisitions they have made… Based on your response here, it would seem that you took a job with a company… when you seemingly know very little about their corporate history.
Now onto my statement regarding the need for developers to create viable alternatives. A good example of a group of developers working to solve the problem presented by Facebooks growing Privacy Concerns, was to create a self hosted alternative that gives back the end user complete control of their own data. The project is called Diaspora. It continues to gain momentum and investing. Projects like this will, in the end replace Facebook. The same way in another year or so, several projects that exist are aimed to replace Twitter.
Note: As I type this I attempted to refresh my Twitter page 4 time. Ony got to Whales. So I guess a 50% up-time is what they are aiming for now?
21 June 2010 at 5:41 pm #
Actually, Tweetie = Atebits :) Would be curious to have a list of these 3 dozen acquisitions they made.
22 June 2010 at 2:09 am #
On April 9, 2010, Twitter acquired Tweetie, the mobile version of which was renamed Twitter (originally to be called ‘Twitter for iPhone’[1]) and released on May 17, 2010.[2] The status of the previously-announced,[3] but as-yet-unreleased, Tweetie 2 for Mac is not presently clear.
Regarding the aquisitions I was refering to companies aquired by Twitter and a simple google search will show you who they were. Most recently namely last week…
June 10, 2010: Twitter acquires Small Thought Systems: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/10/twitter-buys-an-analytics-company/
So let’s see, they were formed in 206, really 2007 since that when they spun off into their own company. So that’s 3 years and they’ve aquired how many companies?
Again, it would appear that you know very little about the company you are employed by. As for this thread, it is very much fail whale. Good luck at Twitter.
23 June 2010 at 2:11 pm #
Don’t worry, I know exactly what kind of company I’m going to work for. Oh… And I love that company :)
Let me say it once again, Tweetie = Atebits. And according to TechCrunch, Twitter made exactly 6 acquisitions since 2006. Very, very far from the “3 dozen” you talked about.
Thanks again for the interest you had in Twitoaster.
